Roughly 116 to 123 miles up I-17 North to SR-179, normally a 2 hour to 2 hour 20 minute drive; allow about two and a half hours with weekend or holiday traffic funneling into the canyon. Verdict: an easy, classic day trip.
Phoenix to the Grand Canyon (South Rim) — about 3.5 to 4 hours
About 230 miles via I-17 and SR-64, or 7 to 9 hours of driving round trip. Doable as a day trip with an early start, but a long one — many travelers make it an overnight.
Phoenix to Tucson — under 2 hours
About 116 miles straight down I-10 South, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes. An easy day trip for Saguaro National Park, Mission San Xavier and the food scene.
Phoenix to Flagstaff — about 2 hours
145 miles up I-17 North, around 2 hours 12 minutes, climbing to 7,000 feet and the pines. Easy as a day trip and a genuine summer escape from the heat.
